There are different types of masks worn during carnival season and at masquerade balls. One the favorites is the Bauta, a mask that covers the whole face. The jaw line is often tilted upwards so that it enables the wearer to eat, drink and talk easily without having to remove the mask. This type of mask is perfect for concealing the wearer’s identity and in times gone by was useful for illicit and romantic encounters. Perhaps it still is?
Another popular mask is the Columbine, a half-mask that is held up to the face by a baton or tied with ribbons. This type of mask is usually highly decorated with gold, silver, crystals and feathers. Many people favor this type of mask as it gives an air of mystery to the wearer whilst only covering half the face.
Masquerade balls were extremely popular, especially in Europe, up to the 18th century when the use of masks began to wane. A new interest in masked balls began in the late 1990’s in North America and is still held today.
Other excuses to dress up and have fun are during Mardi Gras events held throughout the world. Mardi Gras refers to carnival celebrations held from the beginning of or after Epiphany and ending on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday” that refers to the practice of the last night of eating fatty and rich foods before the ritual fasting of Lent. During this time it was popular to wear Mardi Gras masks and costumes.
One of the oldest and most famous carnivals is the Carnival of Venice which was first recorded in 1268. Venetian masks are the main feature of the carnival with people traditionally wearing them between the festival of St Stephen’s Day at the start of the Carnival season and midnight of Shrove Tuesday.
Another notable carnival that is attended by thousands of people is the one held in Rio de Janeiro. Actually, there is not just one carnival but many including the Escolas de Samaba with parades in the sambodromo exhibition center, the Cordao do Bola Preta with parades in the city centre and the Banda de Ipanema with its spectacular drag queens.
Enjoy your masquerade ball, carnival or Halloween party in an amazing masquerade costume or mask and add some mystery to the event.
